Sam Altman's OpenAI is reportedly working on a social media platform that could go head-to-head with Elon Musk’s X, according to a report by The VergeThe two technology titans have opened a new front of their increasingly bitter rivalry.
According to the project’s description, it is an internal prototype that revolves around ChatGPT image-generation capabilities and a social feed.
OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman is reportedly seeking feedback about the concept. It remains in its early stages of development.
OpenAI is in Musk’s crosshairs, and possibly Meta as well, since their upcoming AI assistant will reportedly include social features.
Meta’s project was rumored to have been launched earlier in the year. “Ok fine, maybe we’ll do a social app," Altman responded on X. It looks as if they are going to follow through.
OpenAI, Musk and their legal team are engaged in a public relations and litigation war that is escalating.
OpenAI’s Last Week countersued Musk accused Musk of trying to take over the company with a $97 Billion offer and using “bad faith tactics” in order to gain control. OpenAI wants damages as well as a court order that will prevent further interference.
Altman had previously replied to Musk’s buyout offer for X made in February: “No, thank you. But we would buy Twitter for you at $9.74 Billion.”
Musk Filing a lawsuit In March, he filed an action against OpenAI where he claimed that it had abandoned its non-profit origins. A judge denied Musk requested to stop OpenAI from transitioning to a profit-capped structure, but the trial was accelerated to fall 2025.
OpenAI says that Musk, as CEO of OpenAI at the time, was the one who advocated a profit-oriented model. OpenAI released internal emails showing Musk’s proposal in 2017 for him to control the board of directors and become the CEO. He wrote, “I would unambiguously have the initial control of this company.”
Musk recently launched xAI. The merged xAI was valued at 80 billion dollars in a stock-only deal with X. xAI’s Grok-3 model debuted in Februrary and will scale up dramatically.
OpenAI received a $40 Billion funding round in March led by SoftBank. It was valued at $300 Billion.
